African Taekwondo Tournament (Dakar-2024): Morocco’s Fatima Ezzahra Aboufaras Qualifies for Paris Olympics


Moroccan taekwondo champion Fatima Ezzahra Aboufaras (+67kg) secured her spot in the Olympic Games (Paris-2024) on Saturday, by excelling at the African Taekwondo Tournament held at the Dakar Arena sports complex in Diamniadio from January 9th to 11th.

The former champion of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires defeated Guinea’s Ayong Veronica 2-0 in the final.

However, her compatriot Soufiane Elasbi (-80kg) was eliminated by Faysal Sawadogo of Burkina Faso (0-2).

Three Moroccans out of six participants secured their tickets for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games on Friday. Ayoub Adouich (-63kg), Rachid Ismaili Alaoui (-80kg), and Rajae Akermach (+65kg) were successful.

A total of 44 disabled athletes representing 13 countries participated on the first day of the tournament. Ayoub Adouich defeated Senegal’s Fam Diene 20-10, while Rachid Ismaili Alaoui triumphed over Mali’s Samake Adama 30-25. Rajae Akermach emerged victorious in the final against Ghanaian champion Keyrema Patricia (16-2).

The
other Moroccan athletes, Naoual Laaarif (-47kg), Rahma Rboh (-65kg), and Zakaria Nejjari (-58kg), couldn’t clinch victories in their respective finals against their opponents: Cameroon’s Guileine Chemogne (14-16), Dassi Marie (5-25), and Djavirou Omar from Niger. Nejjari was disqualified due to a technical foul after a headbutt, despite leading 10-2.

The tournament continues on Sunday with the elimination rounds in the Olympic category, featuring two other Moroccan competitors: Nadia Laaraj (-57kg) and Ayoub Bassel (+80kg).
