Al-Sumait Prize for African Development announces list of winners

Board of Trustees of Al-Sumait Prize for African Development in the field of Health on Tuesday declared the list of winners for the year 2021 of the award estimated at USD one million.

Following consideration of the jury and selection committees’ reports, the board has decided to award half of the Prize to Dr. John Nkengasong, the Director of the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), and the other half of the prize to the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID).

The prize was given for their dedication and commitment in preventing the spread of diseases in Africa, especially in the light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual Al-Sumait Prize honors individuals or institutions who have through their work or research made significant advances in fields of food security, health and education in Africa.

The objective of the prizes is to recognize best studies, scientific projects, applied research, and innovative initiatives that have a significant impact and lasting influence on advancing progress to economic and social development in Africa.
