ALGIERS, Algerian Prime Minister Ahmad Oyahia Monday tendered his resignation to President Abdulaziz Bouteflika, who thanked him for his efforts during his term, the Presidency said in a statement.
Bouteflika, it said, named Interior Minister Nouruddin Badawi as Prime Minister. The president created the post of Deputy Prime Minister and named his diplomatic advisor and former foreign minister Ramtane Lamamara in this post.
The new appointments came after Bouteflika withdrew his candidacy for a 5th presidential term.
Protesters were criticizing Oyahiya and demanding his departure.
Bouteflika meanwhile received army chief of staff General Ahmad Caid Saleh who briefed the president about the security situation.
