CAIRO, The Arab League has asked the international community to press Israel in order to respect the international humanitarian law and to be committed to dealing with the Palestinian detainees in line with the international standards.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Arab and Palestinian occupied territories sector, the league condemned “the crime committed by the Israeli prisons due to the deliberate medical negligence towards martyr Aziz Oweisat”.
The league held the Israeli occupation responsible for the death of Oweisat, warning of continued “brutal” practices by the occupation in dealing with the captives that constitute blatantly a violation of human rights law and relevant international laws, according to the statement.
In this context, the league referred to tough conditions at the Israeli prisons, which “lack humanitarian and basic terms, noting that Palestinian prisoners are subject, on a daily basis, to oppressive acts, torture and deliberate medical negligence”. The league stressed the necessity of forming an investigation committee into crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against Palestinians, and bringing the perpetrators to international justice.
Oweisat had been serving a 30-year jail sentence since March, 2014. He was suffering from some medical problems due to brutal attacks by the prison security forces that led to his martyrdom.
