Arab League slams Brazil’s “illegal” opening of trade office in Jerusalem

CAIRO, The Arab League has condemned Brazil’s “unilateral and illegal” decision to open a trade office in Jerusalem, saying the move would cause “severe damage” to Brazilian-Arab relations.

“These measures support the Israeli occupation’s illegal policies aimed at controlling occupied East Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine,” read an Arab League statement.

This “negative change of direction” in Brazil’s diplomacy, including plans to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and shift its embassy to the city, will deal “severe damage to mutual Arab-Brazilian political, economic and diplomatic interests,” it warned.

The 22-nation geopolitical bloc went on to urge nations to abide by United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions confirming that measures aimed at amending the nature, status, or demographic composition of Jerusalem are null and void, with no legal effect.
