Arab League: Syria can resume participation in AL meetings

The Arab League Ministerial Council decided on Sunday that delegations of the Syrian Government could resume participating in meetings of the organization and its apparatuses effective today (Sunday).

The decision by the AL member states came in a statement released by the Arab League Ministerial Council that held a meeting today under chairmanship of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry. The council, according to the statement released at the end of the session dedicated for the Syrian issue, renewed commitment to safeguard Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability, according to the AL charter, with emphasis on the necessity to intensify Arab-level efforts aimed at aiding the Syrians resolve their crisis.

The statement indicated that the resolution was taken for serving joint Arab interests, applauded outcomes of the Jeddah meetings on Syria held on April 14 and the Amman sessions that convened in May, asserted resolve to “play a leading Arab role to resolve the Syrian crisis and tackle its humanitarian, security and political ramifications.” It also underlined necessity of dealing with the impact of the Syrian crisis on neighboring countries, the region and the world, namely hazards emanating from terrorism and drugs’ trafficking. Moreover, it asserted necessity of approaching the Syrian issue gradually, in line with the Security Council Resolution 2254, starting with continuing delivery of humanitarian supplies to those in need in Syria.

The ministers decided to form a commission to pursue the dialogue with the Syrian government to address all the issues that require to be tackled.

Syria’s participation in the league meetings was suspended at an emergency session on November 16, 2011.
