ALGIERSThe 8th Summit of the African Union High Level Committee on Libya has reiterated commitment to Libya’s territorial integrity, national unity and independence.
In a final statement following its meeting in Congo capital Brazzaville, the committee called for accelerating efforts to hold comprehensive intra Libyan talks to end the conflict and find a peaceful solution to the crisis.
It strongly condemned the continued fighting in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
It called for implementing a full and effective ceasefire and agreeing on ceasefire monitoring mechanism to which the African Union can contribute.
The committee said it was notified about Algeria’s offer to organize, in coordination with the United Nations, a comprehensive national reconciliation forum for all Libyan parties in 2020.
It also appreciated the efforts of Libya’s neighboring countries and their sacrifices to help Libyan people.
The AU committee’s summit, kicked off Thursday, brought together several major players in the Libyan crisis, in this case the heads of state and government of the High Level Committee, representatives of African member countries of the United Nations Security Council, those of the countries of the AU Peace and Security Council, representatives of the Sahel and Saharan States, as well as international partners on this issue, in particular Germany, Russia, France, Italy and the United Nations.
The various parties in the Libyan conflict are represented at the meeting.
