Belgium has first woman Prime Minister

BRUSSELS, Sophie Wilmes, the current budget minister in Belgium, has been appointed as prime minister of the present caretaker government, local media reported Sunday.

She is replacing Charles Michel as Belgian PM as he has to prepare for his new job as President of the European Council from 1 December.

The 44-year-old Wilmes will be the first woman at the helm of a Belgian government though this is only a caretaker government, Belgian news website VRT reported.

Politicians are still negotiating to form a new coalition government after May’s general election in Belgium, it noted.

It is not clear how long Wilmes can keep the top job as this will depend on the ongoing negotiations to form a government.
