Caretaker EU Commissions’ powers to be limited

BRUSSELS, The European Commission led by Jean-Claude Juncker will from Friday take a caretaker form until the incoming President Ursula von der Leyen can complete her team of Commissioners.

Juncker has informed all the EU Commissioners of what the EU’s executive body can do as a caretaker, his spokesperson Mina Andreeva told journalists on Thursday.

“Until the von der Leyen Commission is appointed, as on previous occasions in such cases Commission’s powers are limited to dealing with so-called current business,” she said.

The spokesperson clarified that this means continuing the day to day administration of ongoing files that do not require any new initiative or politically sensitive choices to be made.

Von der Leyen was expected to assume office as President of the European Commission from tomorrow, November 1, but she is still struggling with completing her team after three of her Commissioner-candidates were rejected by the European Parliament.

The former German defence minister is expected to move in her office by 1 December if the EP approves all the EU Commissioners.
