China lodges protest with US over officials’ expulsion

BEIJING, China strongly condemned the US’ decision to expel a pair of Chinese officials accused of masquerading as diplomats, said a foreign ministry spokesperson Monday.

Geng Shuang’s remarks came amid a briefing in the Chinese capital after the US government expelled two officials from the Chinese embassy earlier this year after they intruded into a military base.

“The US accusations against Chinese personnel severely disregard reality,” he said, urging Washington to “correct its mistake, cancel the relevant decision and protect Chinese personnel’s proper rights according to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.” According to the New York Times, the Chinese officials were expelled after they drove onto a military base in the State of Virginia, the latest in a spate of measurers Washington has taken amid increasing alarm over alleged Chinese espionage.
