Egypt FM intonations on UNHCR funding

Egyptian Foreign Minister Samih Shukri on Sunday stressed the importance of the UNHCR backing and funding to help support those developing countries mostly affected by the current global crisis.

A statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Shukri’s words came during a meet with Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, which encompassed a number of cases of importance to the staging relations framed under the works that bonds both sides historically, in addition to issues of illegal migration.

Shukri also mentioned the need to transfer the cooperation status from its technical aspects into a higher political corps to meet the interest of the set joint-relations that are based on the principle of partnership in bearing the burden of global crisis.

He also presented his countries view on the matter in dealing with these issues, leaning on “a holistic approach that extends to the developmental and social aspects” without retreating to using security matters to deal with the issue.

“Egypt hosts close to 9 million refugees and immigrants”, said Shukri, an issue being faced and in need of consolidating European support to avert an overflow of migrants.

Shukri also mentioned the joint efforts in combating terrorism, and the joint presidency toils of the upcoming International Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) scheduled for May.

He was also keen on mentioning the major opportunities and fields of investment his country has to offer and the need for European political backing to better facilitate the ventures of these developments.

Pointing to the Electrical interconnection project between Egypt and the northern Mediterranean countries and how it can support the enhancement of the European energy sector’s security, as Egypt remains a place for investment opportunity. Schinas said the EU was very appreciative of the Egyptian efforts on the migration issue and that the Union is ready to present more support for Egypt in the light of its priority role it plays in such matters.
