EP backs exemption of int’l flights from paying for carbon emissions

BRUSSELS– The European Parliament approved Tuesday a resolution to prolong the current exemption for foreign flights to the EU from paying for CO2 emissions until 31 December 2023.

Without it, the EU exemption would expire at the end of this year. The resolution was adopted with 544 votes to 54.

Prolonging the EU exemption will bridge the time gap until the start of the first phase of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Carbon Reduction and Offsetting Scheme for International Aviation scheme.
