BRUSSELS, The European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Palestine (DPAL) Monday expressed concern over the arrest of Palestinian lawmaker Khalida Jarrar and called on Israel to end the practice of “administrative detention.” “The news that Palestinian lawmaker Khalida Jarrar was arrested by Israeli forces on Thursday is cause for deep concern,” said MEP Manu Pineda, Chair of DPAL in a statement.
Jarrar, a long-time activist for Palestinian prisoners, a lawmaker in the Palestinian Legislative Council” and a friend of our Delegation, had been released from prison in February 2019 after having been detained without trial since July 2017,” noted Pineda.
Israeli forces stormed the Jarrar family’s home in the Al-Bira district on the outskirts of Ramallah to re-arrest her on Thursday. At least 70 soldiers in 12 military vehicles took part in the raid, he noted.
“We call on the Israeli authorities to release Khalida Jarrar immediately unless any lawful justifications for her arrest exists,” he said.
The Spanish MEP urged the EU High Representative and the EU Member States to act on Khalida Jarrar’s case, and to put pressure on Israel to stop the practice of so-called “administrative detention”.
Several Palestinian activists and influential community leaders like Jarrar are regularly arrested and held without trail for months or years under the pretext of combating terrorism, said the statement.
“Arbitrary arrests by the Israeli security forces in the West Bank are only meant to terrorise and intimidate the Palestinian people who have been living under illegal occupation for decades,” it added.
