EP President voices “deep concern” about situation in Tunisia

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola expressed deep concern over the human rights situation in Tunisia and called for an end to the crackdown against civil society in the country.

“We are deeply concerned about the authoritarian drift in that country and the instrumentalization of Tunisia’s dire socio-economic situation to reverse the country’s historical democratic transition,” she told a press conference after meeting EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday.

The European Parliament has called for “an end to the ongoing crackdown on civil society,” she said, urging EU foreign policy chief Josep Borell and EU member states to “publicly denounce the deterioration of the human rights situation.” Metsola stressed that Tunisia is a very important neighbour country for the EU and that it is in Europe’s interest to preserve democracy around the Mediterranean.

Earlier in a meeting with EU leaders, she stressed on pushing for solidarity with Ukraine – in political, economic, humanitarian and military terms.

“We need to keep explaining why it is existential for Europe to stand with Ukraine. Why the price of liberty is not too high. I am grateful for the unity around this table,” she said.

“Peace must remain the ultimate goal and the EU is uniquely placed to help that. But in order for there to be peace there must be a Ukraine. And there will not be without our support,” added the Maltese politician.
