The UK will continue to have the European Union’s economic benefits, including the Single Market and Customs Union, during a transition period ahead of a final exit from the bloc after 2020 but will have to follow EU rules.
However, EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier warned in a press conference after EU ministers agreed the steps, that “the whole EU acquis will continue to apply to the UK as well as the full EU supervision.
“Therefore it must also apply all the EU rules,” he said.
In the meantime, it is “very important that the UK voices its position on what it wants on this future relationship,” Barnier stressed.
“We must not forget that the negotiations on the withdrawal of the UK have not been completed. Sufficient progress does not mean full progress,” he said.
