EU expects right of demonstration to be respected in Algeria

BRUSSELS, The European Union (EU) Tuesday called for the respect of the right to demonstrate peacefully in Algeria which has been rocked by big protests against the bid of the 81-year old ailing Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflik for a fifth term.

“On the demonstrations, right to free expression is part of the Algerian constitution and we expect that those rights be respected where there is peaceful demonstration under the rule of law,” Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, told a news conference in Brussels today.

She noted that a number of candidates have come forward to stand for the post of the President and it appears that the Algerian constitutional court has to confirm that those candidates are acceptable under the electoral rule and the constitution.

The spokesperson underlined the importance of EU-Algerian partnership and reiterated the EU’s commitment to deepen the relationship to promote stability, democracy and prosperity in Algeria.
