EU says no solution to Syria conflict by military means

BRUSSELS, The European Union called for a political solution to the Syrian conflict on Monday and stressed that it cannot be solved by military means.

EU spokesperson for foreign affairs, Maja Kocijancic, in a press conference made the comments in light of the statements that were made Sunday evening by Turkey and the US regarding the evolution of the situation in North Syria.

“While recognizing Turkey’s legitimate concerns the EU from the very beginning has said that any sustainable solution to the Syrian conflict will not be reached through military means but requires a general political transition,” she said.

“The EU remains committed to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian state,” she said.

The spokesperson warned that the renewed armed hostilities in North East of Syria “will not only exacerbate civilian suffering and lead to massive displacement but will also risk severely undermining the current political efforts which the EU support.” “We continue to urge Astana guarantors which include Turkey to ensure cessation of hostilities, to protect civilians and unhindered safe and unhindered humanitarian assistance to all of Syria,” said Kocijancic.

“We need to see a political solution,” she stressed.

Commenting on reports on Turkey’s plan to set up a safe zone for Syrian refuges in North East Syria, she said “our position remains clear.

It can only be done once the conditions are met for safe and voluntary return which at this stage is not yet the case..” EU foreign ministers will discuss the situation in Syria during their formal meeting in Luxembourg next week, she noted.
