EU says Tunisian elections held in peaceful manner

BRUSSELS, The European Union Tuesday said that the official results of the first round of the presidential elections in Tunisia took place “in a peaceful and orderly manner, despite the deadlines imposed by early elections.” Tunisia had asked the European Union to deploy an election observation mission to help the process in accordance with Tunisian laws and international standards, noted Maja Kocijancic spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, in a statement.

The EU Election Observation Mission has just made public its preliminary findings which shows that Tunisians were able to freely exercise their civic rights, she noted.

A second round of the presidential election and parliamentary elections organized under similar conditions will enable the Tunisian people to make full use of their civil rights to express their choices and endow their future representatives with all the necessary legitimacy, it added.
