BRUSSELS, The European Union Friday repeated calls for restraint in the Gulf after reports said the US navy shot down an Iranian drone over the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are monitoring the situation very closely. We have expressed concern over the tensions in the Gulf specifically,” Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherni, told a news conference.
She noted that Mogherini has repeatedly called on all parties to show maximum restraint and work towards descalation.
“And this remain our position,” said the EU spokesperson.
Meanwhile, Iran has denied reports that one of its drones was shot down in the Gulf. Earlier, Washington declared that the pilotless aircraft was hit by an American assault ship after it came to close to the vessel in the Gulf waters.
Iran has recently shot down an American drone following attacks on a number of oil tankers in the region.
