The FBI’s Deputy Director, Andrew McCabe is stepping down from the helm amid harsh scrutiny from US President Donald Trump, multiple reports said Monday.
McCabe, the second highest official in the bureau, was expected to retire in March once he is fully eligible to receive pension benefits.
According to multiple reports, McCabe has resigned his position as Deputy Director effective Monday but will remain with the FBI in a different as-yet-unnamed role.
It is not yet clear if his early departure is for personal reasons or a reflection of on-going criticism from Trump and members of the Republican party accusing him of political bias against the administration.
Last week, reports surfaced that Trump had earlier wanted to oust him, after firing FBI Director James Comey last May.
