PARIS, France is actively supporting the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, in his efforts to bring an end to fighting in that country, the French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Agnes von Der Muhll said.
Answering questions in a briefing, the French official said France wants all parties involved in the conflict “to commit in a constructive manner” alongside Griffiths, with the objective of “implementing commitments” made by participants in the Stockholm conference last December.
“France actively supports the mediation carried out by the United Nations Special Envy,” she commented, adding that Paris has “regular dialogue” with all regional parties concerning the Yemen situation and the urgency of ending the fighting.
Von Der Muhll also stressed the importance of UN efforts at bringing humanitarian relief to civilians who are suffering in Yemen and also to respect UN resolution 2452 on the deployment in the Hodeida area.
“The resumption of discussions on a global, and inclusive political accord, taking into account the diversity of the Yemeni parties, is the only real perspective to put an end to the conflict in Yemen,” the French spokeswoman remarked.
France has been sharply critical of rocket and drone attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, based in north Yemen, against Saudi Arabian civilian centres, and has called for a halt to these attacks that have a destabilising impact.
In addition, Paris has condemned Houthi-claimed sabotage attacks against tankers off the UAE and against Saudi oil facilities.
