France Commemorates Kuwait’s Liberation Day

Paris: French veterans of the 1991 Gulf War held a symbolic ceremony on Wednesday, marking the 34th anniversary of Kuwait Liberation Day, in the presence of Ambassador in Paris Abdullah Al-Shaheen.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the ceremony was held at the prominent Arc de Triomphe near the torch of the Unknown Soldier. During the event, Ambassador Al-Shaheen expressed appreciation for the French role in liberating Kuwait, highlighting France’s support for Kuwaiti rights, independence, and sovereignty. He also acknowledged France’s commitment to safety and stability in the region.

‘Operation Daguet’ was the codename for French operations during the 1991 Gulf War. Approximately 18,000 members of the French Armed Forces were deployed during the invasion, making it the second largest European contingent. Formed in September 1990 in Saudi Arabia, it was part of France’s contribution to Operation Desert Shield. In addition to ground forces, France also deployed several combat aircraft and naval units.
