The French Foreign Ministry on Friday welcomed the appointment of Martin Griffiths as a new UN Special Envoy for Yemen and expressed full support for his mission.
Griffiths, who was previously Director of the European Institute for Peace, has considerable knowledge of the humanitarian sector and “has all necessary experience for his mission,” the ministry said in a statement.
France, which has supported the Saudi-led Coalition’s actions in Yemen, said that its priority is “to respond to the humanitarian crisis and arrive at a political solution” in Yemen.
“Only a political solution will allow for the preservation of the territorial integrity of the country, bring back lasting peace and security and bring an end to the dramatic humanitarian situation,” Paris noted, calling for a resumption of negotiations between the parties.
