PARIS, France on Monday welcomed the decision of Algerian President Abdulaziz Bouteflika not to run for a fifth term in office, a statement said.
Bouteflika, who was in ill-health, faced growing popular protests in Algeria and elsewhere from voters who are calling for a political change in Algeria, a perspective welcomed here by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.
“I welcome the statement of President Bouteflika in which he announced he will not seek a fifth mandate and is taking steps to renovate the Algerian political system,” Le Drian stated.
The Foreign Minister noted that the major demonstrations for change in Algeria had taken place “in calm and dignity.” He added that “France hopes that a new dynamic which will exactly respond to the deep aspirations of the Algerian can start rapidly.”
