BRUSSELS, German foreign minister Heiko Maas held a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the sidelines of the EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels Monday and discussed the Iran nuclear deal.
“We might have different views on the nuclear deal but we strive for the same goals, no nuclear weapons for Iran and a different role of Iran in the region. It is good even if we follow different ways to communicate with each other as often as possible,” Mass told journalists after the meeting.
Referring to the attacks on four ships off the coast of UAE yesterday, Mass said “in the current situation it is more than sensible for the American Secretary of State to discuss with his European colleagues.” Maas also had a separate meeting with the foreign ministers of UK, France and EU High Representative Federica Mogherini on the Iran nuclear file.
“We expect from Iran to respect its commitments. We will work now so that the payment instrument will become operational. This nuclear deal is for us the basis for the prevention of Iran’s acquiring a nuclear weapon in the future, which is existential for our security in Europe,” added the German foreign minister.
