Gulf official urges public-private coop. over health programs

– Secretary-General of the Gulf Federation for Cancer Control Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh said Tuesday it is essential for both public and private sectors to work together to ensure successful significant health awareness programs to serve the Gulf society.

Addressing the final ceremony of the 8th version of the Gulf Week for raising awareness of cancer held under the auspices of Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi.

He said this year’s slogan “Our Gulf is Aware” has been realized thanks to joint efforts exerted in Kuwait and other Gulf countries where many relevant activities coincided with this annual Gulf event.

The successive studies, conduced over the past seven years, unequivocally reflected much progress in health awareness about cancer, with cancer risk awareness rates having surged from 20 percent to 65 percent, while cancer recovery misconceptions dwindled to 47 percent at present from 87 percent previously, he remarked.

He commended these figures as reflecting the rising Gulf health awareness of cancer diseases at the level of all the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries.

For her part, Dr. Hessa Al-Shaheen, president of the executive committee of the event, said the committee had worked out an integrated and distinguished program for this year, featuring 40 various activities in scientific, technical and sports domains.

She spoke highly of cancer survivors as being a considerable part of the Gulf cancer awareness system.
