Hong Kong leader says rule of law should reign supreme

BEIJING, Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam on Wednesday highlighted the need to uphold constitutional law in the special administrative region, saying basic law and the constitution form the bedrock of the government.

In remarks amid a seminar coinciding with China’s sixth Constitution Day, she emphasized the “one country, two systems” model that has been in effect since Hong Kong returned from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

Broad development across Hong Kong is also imperative, particularly in the economic and political sectors, she added.

The Chinese-ruled city has been rocked by more than five months of violent protests, triggered by plans to allow extradition to mainland China, with people in Hong Kong fearing it could expose them to unjust trials and violent treatment.
