VIENNA: Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi on Thursday condemned a recent attack on an IAEA vehicle near the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Ukraine. Grossi described the assault as a direct and premeditated act intended to intimidate those working in the field of nuclear safety.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Grossi addressed an emergency meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors that was convened to discuss the ongoing nuclear issues in Ukraine. He confirmed that the attack was executed using a drone equipped with explosives, which detonated upon impact. While the rear part of the vehicle sustained damage, no crew members were injured in the incident.
The targeted vehicle was part of a convoy, Grossi noted, emphasizing the seriousness of the attack. The incident has raised significant concerns about the safety and security of nuclear facilities in conflict zones and the protection of international personnel working in these areas.
