The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has adopted a proposal by the Arab Parliament (AP) on setting up a constant coordination mechanism among speakers of regional parliaments, through a forum entitled the “international forum for regional parliaments”.
The Arab Parliament said in a statement on Tuesday that this came in a message delivered by President of AP Meshal Al-Sulami from IPU Speaker Gabrielle Brown on the move and the start of preparations for the forum.
Brown indicated in the message that preparations are underway for holding the first coordinative meeting to determine possible topics and rotational requirements for the forum, the statement added.
Al-Sulami suggested the idea of establishing the forum while he was leading the PA’s delegation to the 138th session of IPU held recently in Geneva, it noted.
The regional parliaments include the AP, the European Parliament, the Latin American Parliament and others.
The proposal aims to discuss issues which serve international peace and security and enhance cooperation, consultation and views to meet aspirations of the world’s nations, according to the statement.
The suggestion is a mechanism and a qualitative leap in the global parliamentary action in order to make outcomes of the forum’s sessions more effective in the parliamentary action to support stability and security as well as peaceful co-existence among the world’s peoples, the statement concluded.
