Iraq to name new PM after Abdulmahdi’s resignation

BAGHDAD, Iraq’s parliament has started talks with President Barham Saleh to name a new prime minister after lawmakers accepted the resignation of Adel Abdulmahdi, following weeks of violent protests against his government.

Abdulmahdi announced his resignation on Friday after more than a month of bloody protests calling for a change of leadership, before it was unanimously accepted by parliament on Sunday.

Thousands of mostly young Iraqis have been demonstrating against corruption, unemployment and poor public services, triggering the first resignation by a sitting prime minister since the US-led invasion in 2003.
