BAGHDAD, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel-Mahdi said on Friday his country is seeking to ease regional tensions and to safeguard regional interests.
This came during a phone contact received Abdel-Mahdi from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, according to an Iraqi government statement.
During the phone conversation, they discussed recent meetings and consultations in Baghdad about this significant issue that is related to the security and interests of the region, Europe and the world, it said.
He stressed the significance of developing relations with the US and continuing cooperation in all fields, primarily economic cooperation and counter-terrorism.
On his part, Pompeo appreciated Iraq’s growing role, along with its various relations with Arab and regional countries, in addition to its efforts to maintain security and stability and to avoid escalation.
He pointed to continuing cooperation between the US and Iraq in the field of fighting corruption, according to the statement.
