Italy beats England on penalties, snatches 2nd Euro title

Italy defeated England 3-2 in a penalty shootout in the final of the UEFA Euro 2020 at the British Wembley Stadium and grabbed its second European title.

The two teams went to penalty kicks after the match and extra 30 minutes ended in a 1-1 draw.

England, which was aspiring to win its first European title, had scored the opener in the second minute by its wingback Luke Shaw. Shaw’s goal was the quickest scored in a European Championship final.

Italy, however, fought back until its defender Leonardo Bonucci equalized in the 67th minute with a tap-in.

In the penalties, Domenico Berardi, Leonardo Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi scored for Italy and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made two saves.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Bukayo Saka failed to score for England in the spot-kicks, thus Italy crowned the Euro 2020 champions.

This is second European title for Italy, the first was in 1968 – the longest gap between titles for a nation.
