TOKYO The Japanese government reiterated on Thursday that there is no change in preparing for the Tokyo Summer Olympics as planned despite the World Health Organization’s (WHO) coronavirus pandemic declaration.
“The government will make preparations to host the Tokyo Games as scheduled while maintaining close contact with the International Olympic Committee, Organizing Committee and the Tokyo metropolitan government. There is no change in our stance,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference.
The remarks by the top government spokesman came a day after WHO Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus declared worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 118,000 infections across 110 countries and territories.
The Tokyo Olympics will take place from July 24 to August 9 and the Paralympics August 25 to September 6.
