Kuwait FM joins UNRWA ministerial strategic dialogue

KUWAIT Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah joined the second ministerial strategic dialogue of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) via video conference on Wednesday.
The dialogue, held under a joint invitation from Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi and his Swedish counterpart Ann Linde, explored sustainable ways to support the UN agency and ensure sufficient funding for its activities.
In his address to the video conference, Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Al-Nasser reaffirmed Kuwait’s unwavering support to the noble objectives of the Agency, which undergoes financial difficulties coupled with the impacts of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
He urged the international community to show more solidarity, shoulder its moral and humanitarian responsibilities and help the Agency continue its efforts to alleviate the suffering of “the brotherly people of Palestine.” “The international community needs to combine forces to find innovative and sustainable ways for funding the relief efforts of the Agency,” the minister stressed.
“The State of Kuwait has recently contributed to the World Health Organization (WHO) a total of USD 60 million, of which USD 10 million were channeled to our brothers in Palestine to help stem the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate its impacts,” Sheikh Dr. Ahmad noted.
He highlighted the need of the UNRWA continuing its mission under the UN mandate until a final and durable settlement of the Palestine question is reached pursuant to relevant UN resolutions.
The participants in the ministerial dialogue appreciated the efforts of all partners of the UN Agency to help bridge the gap in its budget of last year and continue its programs geared towards improving the social, economic, education and healthcare services for Palestinian refugees. The dialogue gathered foreign ministers of Egypt, France, Germany, Japan, Norway and the United Kingdom as well as representative of the European Commission and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.
