GENEVA, Kuwait has expressed deep concern about the continuation of the armed conflict in Syria, calling on all parties to put an end to attacks on innocent civilians and to violations of human rights in the war-ravaged Arab country.
Kuwait strongly condemns the serious violations of human rights in Syria, especially the continued attacks on innocent civilians, said Kuwait’s Permanent Representative at the UN and International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Nasser Al-Hain. This was in a special session on Thursday at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on the latest report of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria.
Ambassador Al-Hain affirmed that Kuwait attaches a great deal of importance to the issue of missing persons in the Syrian conflict, noting that his country took the initiative during its non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council when it submitted the draft of UNSCR 2474 on this file.
He appreciated the independent commission’s clear concern about the missing person in Syria and expressed hopes that the UN Human Rights Council and would deal seriously with this important humanitarian issue.
Kuwait’s envoy urged all parties to the conflict to heed the international calls for providing information on the fate or whereabouts of the missing persons, help reunite them with their families, and deal with their remains in line with recognized international and humanitarian norms.
Ambassador Al-Hain said that Kuwait has assumed its responsibility towards the Syrian people since the beginning of the crisis and has sought, since the first hours, to mobilize international support for humanitarian operations and to assist countries hosting the displaced people.
He reiterated Kuwait’s support to the efforts of the UN envoy to Syria, stressing that there is no military solution to the Syrian crisis.
Kuwait believes that the only solution to the conflict is a just, political settlement based on the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council Resolution No 2254, he concluded.
