Vienna: Observer of International Organizations and Conferences at Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) Dhari Buyabes, gave a speech on Tuesday regarding the effectiveness of Kuwait’s national legislation in combatting corruption. This came during Kuwait’s participation in the Second resumed 15th Session of the Implementation Review Group of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in Vienna, Austria.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Buyabes stated that Kuwait underwent two sessions of the implementation review, involving contributions from all concerned national authorities, both governmental and non-governmental. The first session significantly impacted the development of legislation, procedures, and institutional mechanisms to fight corruption, aligning with international and regional legislative advancements.
Buyabes highlighted that the initial step was establishing the Anti-Corruption Authority, which included a law for submitting, receiving, and examining financial disclosure statements and cri
minalizing illicit gain. Kuwait further enacted laws to establish the State Bureau of Financial Control and the Central Agency for Public Tenders.
Additionally, Kuwait introduced laws on the right to access information, prevent conflicts of interest, determine corruption crimes, and a ministerial decision on identifying actual beneficiaries. The country is also updating several national legislations, including criminalizing bribery in the private sector, bribery of foreign public servants, and enhancing existing laws against money laundering, in accordance with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
