Kuwaiti research center earns invention patent from U.S.

The Environment and Life Sciences Research Center, affiliated with Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), has been granted an invention patent for making a product for enhancing soil’s physical components from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

KISR said in a press release on Monday that the invention was recorded in the name of the center’s researchers, Dr. Hanaa Bou-rizk and Dr. Shawki Lahaleeh. The pair has re-used agricultural waste to reclaim sandy plots of land for cultivation.

Accumulation of such randomly discarded waste increases “green house” emissions, underground water pollution, but their use with the newly made product can be beneficial for agriculture.

The innovated organic product, mixed with some fertilizers, can be added with the sand or soil where it acts like a sponge that keeps humidity at the roots’ level.

USPTO is an agency in the U.S. Department of Commerce that issues patents to inventors and businesses for their inventions, and trademark registration for product and intellectual property identification.
