MOSCOW, Kyrgyzstan’s security forces have arrested former President Almazbek Atambayev in a crackdown on his house in the village of Koi-Tash on charges of corruption and abuse of power.
Atambayev was immediately taken to the Interior Ministry’s Central Investigation Department, security sources were quoted by Russian news agency, Tass, as saying.
A special forces soldier was killed in the crackdown, while 52 people suffered injuries during clashes between policemen and Atambayev’s entourage, the source said.
Kyrgyz parliament in June stripped Atambayev of immunity ahead of trial for alleged involvement in corruption, abuse of power and illegal possession of property.
