Lalla Meryem Golf Cup: Mexico’s Maria Fassi Tops Leaderboard on Day One


Mexican golfer Maria Fassi seized the top spot on the leaderboard during the first day of the 27th Lalla Meryem Golf Cup. The prestigious tournament, held under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, continues at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat from February 19 to 24.

Fassi’s stellar performance, with a remarkable scorecard of 65 strokes, 8 under par, secured her the leading position. Not far behind, Moroccan golfer Inès Laklalech claimed the second spot with a total of 68 strokes, 5 under par.

The competition witnessed a strong showing from Spanish golfer Teresa Toscano, who finished third with a total of 69 strokes, 4 under par. Meanwhile, Moroccan player Maha Haddioui secured the 25th position, finishing the day with an even par score of 73 strokes.

In a post-game statement to the press, Inès Laklalech, the 2022 Lacoste Ladies Open winner in France, revealed her strategic approach to each of the 18 holes, tailoring her gameplay to match the pace set by her fellow competitors, particularly the
formidable Maria Fassi.

Laklalech emphasized the high-caliber competition this year, with the Lalla Meryem Cup featuring professional golfers ranked prominently on the global stage. She stressed the importance of maintaining a consistent level of play throughout the competition to achieve a commendable result.

A total of 108 golfers from the Ladies European Tour are participating in the 27th Lalla Meryem Golf Cup, showcasing a diverse and competitive field. Among them are renowned players such as Spanish Nuria Iturrioz, a two-time champion in 2016 and 2019, Taiwanese Trichat Cheenglab, the 2023 LET No. 1, and Swedish Johanna Gustavsson, titled at the Lacoste Ladies Open.

It is worth noting that Morocco stands as the unique host of both men’s and women’s events in the European golf calendar, a distinction marked by the simultaneous organization of these events in the same city, on the same dates, and at the same venue.
