Lebanon highlights “dire need” for new government

BEIRUT, Lebanon’s chief lawmaker Nabih Bari and leading politician Saad Al-Hariri, who has emerged as the likeliest candidate for prime minister, have agreed on the “dire need” to form a new government.

A new government should be formed bearing the nation’s best interests in mind, the two officials said in a joint statement on Tuesday, pointing out that “national unity” was key to keep any forms of discord at bay.

After repeated delays, Lebanon’s president has set Thursday as the date for formal consultations with lawmakers to form a new government.
