Macron stresses Iraq security, stability on Mosul visit

IRBIL, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday the international community, including Paris, is committed to Iraq’s security and stability, a day after a regional summit aimed to shore up support for Baghdad.

Amid a visit to Iraq’s war-torn city of Mosul, the French leader applauded Iraqis for standing up against the so-called Islamic State, pledging that Paris would contribute towards “structured regional projects” across Iraq.

Among these projects is a school Paris is funding in Mosul, at a cost of USD 60 million, in addition to plans to open a French consulate in the northern Iraqi city, Macron added.

Heads of state from around the world attended a Baghdad-hosted summit on Saturday, discussing pan-regional efforts to support Iraq in the fight against terrorism.
