PARIS, French President Emmanuel Macron will hold talks on Thursday (tomorrow) with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg to discuss preparations for the NATO Summit meeting in early December amid tensions over Macron’s blunt remarks on the Atlantic Alliance, Elysee Palace said in a statement Wednesday.
The meeting comes just over two weeks after Macron warned that Europe’s position in the Atlantic Alliance was at a dangerous point and the French leader warned bluntly that NATO was heading for a state of “brain death.” “What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of NATO,” Macron said in an interview with Britain’s “The Economist” weekly.
Macron’s remarks caused a furor amid certain NATO members and at the Alliance’s HQ in Brussels.
Thursday’s talks are expected to be frank and to try to pave the way for discussions on potential reforms that Macron sees as desirable at NATO.
The NATO leaders are to meet for Summit talks in Britain December 3-4.
