PARIS, The French Foreign Ministry on Friday said it was not up to France to comment on the composition of the new Lebanese executive under Prime Minister Hassan Diab, but it did say the new government must be effective and cater to the reforms called for in widespread demonstrations.
“It is not up to us to comment on the composition of the future Lebanese government,” the Foreign Ministry said.
“It is up the Lebanese leaders to do this (form a government) keeping in mind the general interest of all Lebanese,” French spokeswoman Agnes Von Der Muhll said in a briefing.
“The only criterion must be the effectiveness of this government in the service of reforms expected by the population,” she added.
Prior to the appointment of Diab, Lebanon has undergone months of popular protests which began to turn violent days before Diab took office.
