Pence: Venezualan election was a ‘sham,’ a ‘blow’ to democracy

WASHINGTON, May 21 (KUNA) — Vice President Mike Pence on Monday called Venezuela’s elections “a sham-neither fair nor free” and stressed that the “fake process is a further blow to the proud democratic traditions” of the country.

“Every day, thousands of Venezuelans flee brutal oppression and grinding poverty – literally voting with their feet. The United States will not sit idly by as Venezuela crumbles and the misery of their brave people continues,” said Pence in a statement.

“America stands against dictatorship and with the people of Venezuela. The Maduro regime must allow humanitarian aid into Venezuela and must allow its people to be heard,” he stressed.

The White House is expected to release a statement from President Donald Trump on the Venezuelan elections later on Monday.
