(With HUM-UN-MIDEAST-INVESTIGATION) RAMALLAH, The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) welcomed the decision made by the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva earlier Friday to dispatch an independent, international commission of inquiry to the occupied Palestinian territories.
The commission is to investigate all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the context of large-scale civilian protests in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The passing of the resolution by a large majority of the HRC members is great step on the right track to bring to book the Israeli occupation forces for the massacre they committed recently in Gaza Strip, Secretary of the PLO Executive Committee Saeb Erekat said in a press release.
He expressed gratitude for the 29 countries that voted for the resolution and sided with justice and right.
Erekat denounced the two countries – the United State and Australia – that voted against, and the 14 others that abstained, saying that they encourage the Israeli authorities to persist in the human rights abuses and atrocities against civilians, thus pushing the region to the edge of abyss of violence and bloodshed.
He promised that the Palestinian side will offer all possible support to the commission of inquiry and continue the legal and political measures against the Israeli crimes at all regional and international forums.
