Pompeo applauds “courage” of Afghan voters

WASHINGTON, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo applauded Monday the “courage” of Afghan voters who made the presidential elections in Afghanistan “possible” despite challenges and threats.

Pompeo said in a tweet “we applaud the courage of Afghan voters, poll workers, and security forces who made Afghan elections possible despite technical challenges and security threats.” “Afghanistan’s institutions must take all necessary steps to transparently tabulate results and investigate complaints,” he stressed.

On Saturday, polling closed all across Afghanistan for the fourth Presidential elections in the country since the fall of the Taliban in 2001 with reports highlighting lower voter turnout compared to past elections amid violence in different cities.
