Recalled Algerian ambassador to France to return to Paris — Elysee

The Algerian ambassador to France who had been called back to his country would return to Paris in the coming days, the Elysee declared on Friday.

The Elysee said in a statement Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune notified his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in a phone contact that the ambassador would be sent back to the French capital soon.

The presidential statement said the two sides affirmed necessity of boosting mutual cooperation.

Algeria recalled, last February, its envoy to France after Paris intervened to fly out via Tunisia Amira Bouraoui, a journalist wanted by Algiers.

Tebboune “firmly protested against the “clandestine and illegal exfiltration of an Algerian citizen” via Tunisia to France. He had ordered ambassador Said Moussi to be recalled from Paris “with immediate effect”.

Bouraoui had been arrested in Tunisia and was able to board a flight to France. She was sentenced in Algeria in May 2021 to two years in prison for “insulting Islam and insulting the president.”
