ROPME working on strategy on climatic change impact on Gulf

The Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) declared on Wednesday that it is drafting a strategy to cope with climatic change and assess its impact on the marine environment throughout the Gulf region.

ROPME’s Executive Secretary General Dr. Jassem Bechara said in a statement that the organization has recently a held a virtual meeting, in coordination the Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), in London.

CEFAS is an executive agency of the United Kingdom Government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). It carries out a wide range of research, advisory, consultancy, monitoring and training activities for a large number of customers around the world.

Dr. Bechara said ROPME at the London meeting briefed participants in the gathering about its efforts for facing the climatic change and its impact on marine life particularly in the Gulf region.

The regional organization has carried out wide-scale surveillance in the coastal environment stretching from the northernmost location of the Gulf to the Omani shores.

The Kuwait-headquartered organization groups as member states Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Iraq and Iran.
