Russia criticizes Syrian opposition boycott of Sochi talks

Russia on Saturday strongly criticized the Syrian opposition’s decision to boycott a national dialogue conference, due in Sochi on Monday.

The decision of the high negotiations authority to boycott Sochi “does not only undermines its reputation but negatively affects its status as a party of the Syrian negotiations,” Interfax news agency quoted diplomatic sources as saying.

The high negotiations authority announced earlier in the day it would not attend the Sochi talks.

The Russian sources, which were not named, said Moscow was working on creating suitable circumstances for all Syrian parties to sit on the table of dialogue.

“If the representatives of the authority do not wish to speak with anyone, then they have nothing to say,” they added.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov met with an authority delegation in Moscow last week and said the talks in Sochi was within UN Security Council resolution 2554 and would pave way for constitutional reforms and UN-monitored elections.
