Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain slam Lebanon FM’s “derogatory” words

A trio of Gulf Arab states on Tuesday condemned remarks made by Lebanon’s caretaker Foreign Minister Charbel Wehbe directed at Saudi Arabia, saying his comments were highly “derogatory.” “These statements are incompatible with the simplest diplomatic norms and are inconsistent with the historical relations between the two brotherly peoples,” state-run SPA news agency quoted a Saudi foreign ministry statement.

Riyadh has summoned Lebanon’s ambassador to the kingdom, handing him an official protest note over the remarks made by the minister in a television interview on Monday.

Beirut’s envoys to the UAE and Bahrain were also summoned and given protest notes over Wehbe’s comments, which Abu Dhabi called “racist” and Manama termed “derogatory.”
